"Black Swan" comes from the 2009 Sunset Rubdown album Dragonslayer. The band began as the solo project of Spencer Krug, better known for his work with Wolf Parade. Dragonslayer stands as one of the important albums of 2009. Musically, Sunset Rubdown is able to combine the lyrics of bands like the Fleet Foxes and Arcade Fire with the raw sound of the Silversun Pickups. Each song on the album feels like taking a demented trip through a dark fairy tale. Enjoy!
A collaboration with Fred Arminson and St. Vincent yields a humorous result. The song is "Laughing with a Mouthful of Blood" from her 2009 album Actor. She kicked off a new tour through Ithaca earlier this Fall, I think it is one of the best concerts I attended.
A collaboration that I really love, the Chemical Brother's and the Flaming Lips teamed up in 2003 to release the single "The Golden Path". The music video does a good job of juxtaposing the corporate life (i.e. the rest of the world) and hippie life (i.e. Ithaca). I'm secretly waiting to be spun around in a field filled with bubbles.
Well... a disturbing video for the song "Wait for Me" from Moby's 2009 album Wait for Me. The video contains a slight back story. Moby operates a free music licensing service to amateur and independent film makers. One of the challenges he posted to the filmmaker community was to design a music video for "Wait for Me". The resulting work from Jessica Dimmock and Mark Jackson catalogs loneliness and drug addiction. They have previous experience working with heroine addicts. One of the quotes that struck me from Jessica Dimmock was that:
"We have long been interested in the experience of loneliness, and what happens when you feel the necessity to leave."
I don't believe the sentiment is too original, but I believe that the initial concept and the final product match very well. Just goes to show, whether you are taking a picture, shooting a music video, or posting to a blog, you should do so with purpose and the results will be better :)
I really like Royksopp, I started listening to techno/indie experimental music before rock and hip-hop. I had a really hard time understanding and remembering lyrics, so I turned to bands such as the Chemical Brothers, Royksopp, Moby, and Junkie XL where the lyrics were absent or either very repetitive.
As a bonus, there is the alien invasion reference.
Not much for the music video since it is just the image of the album cover, but this is an awesome song. My taste seems to be picking up on the local Ithaca folk revival influence. I enjoy the complexity of the emotions behind a lot of the songs. I've come to realize that most of pop songs are about sex/revenge/falling in love. The majority of Indie rock music falls along the same lines with a little more of the dissatisfaction of life thrown in to boot. But when you get to artists like Damien Jurado, Yeasayer, Shearwater, and the Great Lake Swimmers, the songs are about life. It captures more of the subtlety and entanglements of the highs and lows of what we go through. Relationships are not simply about sex and love, life and youth complicate everything. I think "Sheets" is a prime example of this. Well, that is your DJ Philosophy for the evening.
I came across this song in a poignant moment in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The lyrics and melody mesh very well for this French collaboration. Enjoy!
